The media reports on Saturday quoted home ministry officers claiming that the 2021 census might no longer accumulate OBC records because no such choice had been taken via the cabinet yet. In August 2018, the home ministry issued a media declaration to mention that the decadal census scheduled for 2021 might accumulate OBC statistics related to their populace and socioeconomic situations.
The British had accumulated caste-sensible statistics in 1931, following which the exercise turned into stopped. In 2012-thirteen, the then-UPA authorities carried out the Socioeconomic Caste Census. However, that information is yet to be launched.

Justice V. Eswaraiah, former chairman of the National Commission for Backward Classes, said that any decision against collecting records on OBCs would harm the community.
“Whenever disputes related to reservation for OBCs are challenged, the court docket asks for facts at the socio-financial circumstance of the community and its illustration in authorities jobs and education. When the government announced that facts on OBCs could be gathered, it delivered cheer to the community. But now they’re going to return to their choice. The authorities are not doing justice to the OBC community,” said Eswaraiah.
He criticized the Centre’s decision to increase via every other six months the term of a panel set up for categorizing OBCs for the rational distribution of reservation benefits. The cabinet on Wednesday determined to increase the tenure of the Justice Rohini Commission till January 31, 2020.

“The proposed extension of the tenure shall allow the fee to put up a comprehensive document on the sub-categorization of OBCs, after consultation with diverse stakeholders,” a government media release said.
“I would love to ask the government the cause in the back of the extension. How lengthy are you going to offer extensions?” Eswaraiah requested.

The Justice Rohini Commission was set up by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 2, 2017, to signify sub-classes in the primary list for OBCs so that each category gets reservation benefits in keeping with their population percentage. The sub-categorization aims to ensure that the more backward a number of the OBCs get the right of entry to blessings of reservation in educational institutions and government jobs.
Nearly 2,500 castes on the central listing of OBCs are cumulatively entitled to 27 in keeping with cent reservation in primary government jobs and admission in centrally funded higher instructional institutions.

“The selection to increase the tenure of the Justice Rohini Commission method denial of valid proportion to the maximum backward OBCs. I sense that the government has performed this below stress from forwarding OBC groups,” said Professor P.C. Patanjali, a pacesetter of the OBC Joint Action Committee, an umbrella corporation of numerous OBC businesses such as the Pichhda Varg Vikas Manch, Ati Pichhda Varg Mahamanch, and the All India OBC Organisation.

Nine states, including Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and one Union territory, have already started sub-categorization in the OBC reservation. Hans Raj Jangra, any other OBC chief, stated that dropping the plan to acquire OBC facts in the census could oppose the pastimes of OBCs. “The authorities are scared that communities will begin disturbing proportionate representation in jobs and education once they know approximately their population and socio-monetary fame.”
